What Is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound from the cannabis sativa plant. In other words, it is extracted from the marijuana plant. This plant makes between 100 and 140 different chemicals called cannabinoids. The most well-known examples include CBD and its chemical cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is the most abundant chemical of the cannabis sativa plant, and there have been decades of research around it. Fortunately, research has confirmed that THC can help in the treatment of such things as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

CBD is the second most abundant chemical from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are naturally produced in humans and are involved in many bodily functions, such as pain sensation, sleep, and mood. CBD is thought to interact with the human’s natural cannabinoids to increase their effectiveness.

CBD has been used for a variety of reasons in recent years. CBD oil for veterans, CBD oil to manage PTSD, and CBD oil to manage pain are just a few examples.

With that in mind, here are four Fictions to be aware of when reviewing information about CBD and its products.

Four Fictions About CBD

It Gets You High

This is not true. As mentioned above, the cannabis plant’s two most abundant chemical contributors are CBD and THC. Of the two, THC is the chemical most often related to cannabis or marijuana and causes the psychoactive intoxication or “high” feeling. CBD is the non-psychoactive portion of the plant. In fact, when taking CBD, you won’t feel sedated or altered in any way.

This is how it works: while CBD interacts with the naturally occurring cannabinoids in human systems, THC binds to nerve receptors, specifically the CB 1 and CBD 2 nerve receptors, in the brain and throughout the rest of the body. It is believed that this difference is what allows THC to provide that “high” feeling, while CBD only provides the benefits of its natural interaction with cannabinoids.

THC and CBD have been found to manage certain health conditions. However, many people don’t enjoy the “high” side effect produced by THC and are fearful of the unpleasant and dangerous side effects of other medications. As such, CBD can offer a non-toxic, natural benefit to those who are looking for something free from side effects.

It is important to note that some people may react to CBD in different ways. According to some doctors, about 5% of people say they feel altered after taking CBD. As such, there may be some side effects that are not the norm and may cause symptoms similar to the aforementioned “high” effect. As always, if something occurs that is out of the ordinary while you’re taking CBD, you should consult your doctor about your concerns.

One way to ensure that CBD products are safe to use is to make sure the products are third-party-tested for quality assurance. This will ensure that no outside chemicals (such as carcinogens) are present and that the THC levels are where they are supposed to be.

It Only Helps if you take it a Certain Way

CBD can be taken in several different ways from a variety of products. While each method comes with its own set of pros and cons. There doesn’t appear to be any difference in its effectiveness once consumed.

There are four common methods of taking CBD: edibles, sublingual products, topical products, and vaping or smoking.

Edibles are a good method to take CBD discreetly. As an extra bonus, the sugar and preservatives in edibles help to mask the strong taste of cannabis plant products. However, since the liver and the digestive tract break down the CBD in edibles through a process called the “first-pass effect,” it may take up to two hours for you to feel its effects, and even then, you’ll only absorb about 20 to 30 percent of the CBD.

Sublingual products are designed to be absorbed under the tongue. The side effect of letting the CBD absorb under the tongue is that more of the CBD will be absorbed, and it will take effect faster.

Topical products are designed to be applied to the skin. Often, this comes in the form of CBD-infused lotions, balms, creams, or transdermal patches. Topical CBD products are beneficial when treating localized pain or skin conditions such as eczema.

While Topical products aren’t subject to the “first-pass effect,” the permeability of the skin is poor in comparison to the sublingual tissue. As such, topical products may not absorb the CBD as well as when using a sublingual product.

While not as common as the methods mentioned above, CBD can be absorbed through smoking or vaping. This would be done using a high-CBD cannabis flower in a “joint” or using a cartridge that contains CBD oil in a vaporizer.

Smoking and vaping allow the CBD to go directly into the bloodstream, and you’ll feel the effects much faster than with the other methods. Unfortunately, smoking and vaping have been linked to other health conditions that many would not wish to chance.

CBD Products Are Illegal

CBD oil and other products normally come from medical or industrial CBD plants. There has some progress in the legalization of CBD products in the United States; in 2019, President Trump signed a new farm bill that made it federally legal to grow CBD.

While this is true federally, each state can set policy around CBD and its legality. At the time of writing, CBD was fully legal in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C. Additionally, 23 states have made it legal in some form (specifically for medical purposes), while another 14 states permit the use of just CBD oil.

So, are CBD products legal? Largely, yes.

CBD Can Cure Cancer
Unfortunately, this is not true.

It should be stated, however, that no large clinical trials are investigating the use of CBD as a standalone treatment right now. As research continues on CBD and its applications, there may be more insights and conclusions drawn. For now, however, there is no evidence that CBD can cure cancer.

With that said, there has been extensive research on CBD oil as a complementary therapy for cancer management. This often comes in combination with THC. When combined, CBD and THC can help with pain management and nausea.

In summary, while CBD may be used as a beneficial compound to help manage some cancer treatments, there is no evidence to support its ability to treat or cure cancer.

CBD oil and other CBD products are still fairly new to the market. With the new farm bill that has made it federally legal to use CBD products, and many states allowing differing levels of legality, CBD had become a new focus in health and well-being.

Unfortunately, that new popularity has brought with it as many incorrect assumptions about CBD as it has useful, fact-driven information. Some myths that have come about from this rise in demand include that CBD can get you high, that CBD only works when you take it a specific way, that CBD is illegal and that CBD can cure cancer.
