CBD oil continues to be of great help to many people who suffer from different health conditions.  However, as it is a substance that is still under study, one of the first concerns that arise is whether  it can be combined with other medications that are being taken. An example of this is an  antidepressant, as many people want to know can you take CBD with Paxil. Taking into account the importance of this doubt, the answer will be presented below.

CBD and paxil: what are they?

Whether a dose of CBD oil can be used when taking Paxil does not have a clear answer. This is because there are no verified and documented interactions between these substances.

However, this may simply be due to a lack of information about it. Looking at how CBD oil works and how it affects metabolism, there is a theoretical interaction between CBD oil and Paxil, but its clinical significance is unknown.

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is an important component of cannabis. While THC is probably  better known, CBD makes up almost 40% of cannabis extracts and has a wide range of potential benefits when used medicinally, although further study is needed to better understand the  compound.

CBD dosing explored in studies is highly variable, but there is positive preliminary evidence for a variety of indications including:

Recently, CBD has skyrocketed in popularity, with multiple products available in a plethora of natural health food and supplement stores.

For its part, Paxil or paroxetine is an antidepressant that inhibits serotonin re-uptake. It is used when there are people who suffer from depression, panic, obsessive-compulsive disorder,  anxiety, post-traumatic stress, among other conditions.

As mentioned before, Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used for the treatment of depression and panic disorders.

If this enzyme is inhibited, for example by CBD, drug concentrations could theoretically increase,  leading to an increased risk of dose-related side effects such as:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Serotonin syndrome

Until studies looking specifically at how CBD interacts with Paxil are completed, we can only make educated guesses. There are many studies positing that while CBD does inhibit metabolizing  enzymes, it is not significant and the blood concentrations needed to affect these metabolizing enzymes in humans far exceed what is possible with usual dosing.

Additionally, there are some studies indicating that CBD may help with depressive symptoms and  could potentially increase the effects of antidepressants such as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors.

In general, the potential interaction between CBD and selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor drugs like Paxil appears to be relatively low for most people, based on available data.

However, the best option will always be to talk to your doctor about adding CBD to your medication regimen to check for potential side effects, interactions, and changes in your disease state.
