CBD for Veterans: How to Benefit from THC Free CBD

by | Jul 1, 2020

As the norm continually changes on cannabis, it’s a regular occurrence now for doctors to hear about the benefits of CBD from their patients. Testimonies of “I have less pain”, or “I am having less anxiety”, and even “my menstrual cramps are less intense” are common statements heard. We are seeing a significant increase in the number of patients who are military members obtaining incredible results, and it’s clear that THC free CBD for veterans is providing a ton of benefit to many.

Doctors are learning about the cannabis plant more every day, which contains many different chemicals, but of notice is cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD is the second most common of the active ingredients of cannabis. While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is actually derived directly from the hemp plant, which you can think of as a distant cousin of the marijuana plant. Even though CBD is a component of marijuana (one of hundreds), by itself it does not cause the “high” that is typically associated with smoking marijuana.

A report from the World Health Organization (WHO) states: “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. To date, there is no evidence of public health related issues associated with the use of pure CBD.”

How CBD Affects the Body

Somewhere between the health hemp seeds you add into your morning smoothie and psychoactive marijuana is CBD oil.

Yes, CBD does come from the same plant as the stuff you would smoke. But CBD contains only trace amounts, legally less than 0.3%, of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the chemical component that has the psychoactive effects. CBD contains cannabinoids, which are the naturally occurring chemicals within hemp plants that support the body’s normal inflammatory process.

All humans have the endocannabinoid system. It is a complex network in the body that processes naturally occurring chemicals. The ECS is responsible for regulating the functions of the immune system, the central nervous system, the plasticity of the brain, and many other necessary bodily functions.

Our human body and the cannabis plant both make cannabinoids, so we are biologically programmed to be able to use CBD effectively to help us support a healthy response to inflammation and pain.

Understanding Possible CBD Side Effects

It’s important to understand that much research on CBD still needs to be done, as it’s only been in recent years that CBD usage has skyrocketed. From what has been researched, CBD oil has shown to provide numerous benefits, including supporting the body’s normal inflammatory processes, antioxidant properties, and helping manage the stress response.

It can be used safely by many people, but as in anything that someone consumes from food to caffeine, and prescription or OTC drugs, everyone reacts differently. Generally, CBD is well-tolerated. As with all things, we advise starting low and going slow with dosage, as complex reactions are always possible in medicine.

Clinical research shows that some common symptoms, the severity and type of which can vary from one person to the next, include:

  • Change in appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry Mouth
  • Nausea

As with ALL medicinal use, consultation with your doctor is ALWAYS recommended.

CBD for Veterans: The Good Side Effects

  • CBD for Anxiety

The best way we have heard veterans using CBD describe the noticeable difference in this distinct area is that CBD oil diffuses that knotted, nervous feeling in their gut. Anxiety is the most common mental illness disorder in the United States, affecting nearly 40 million adults age 18 or older. That is 18% of the population. Even though anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only around 37% of those suffering from it receive treatment. And, studies show that anxiety is a common diagnosis in veterans.

Feeling anxious is a normal reaction to stress; military members and veterans may experience stress and anxiety for a variety of reasons. Past events of traumatic experiences can cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). CBD oil with no THC for veterans can help with these mental health issues.

Anxiety rates have soared in the past few years. What has changed? No one has a definitive answer unfortunately, as to why anxiety is so common nowadays. It could be attributed to social media, or poor sleep habits or lowered stigma, but many believe underreporting in the past is the biggest factor.

Nevertheless, big groups of people or unknown social situations (which is a lot of the time, let’s be honest!) instill a debilitating fear, but by taking CBD oil, it can allow you to shed that fear a bit–or possibly even a lot! The calmer, “I’ve got this” sort of feeling is one that can really make a difference.

  • CBD Helps with Sleep

Getting enough sleep can be very difficult! Sleep can be unpredictable. How frustrating is it to have weeks at a time filled with great sleeps and the next few weeks of sleep riddled with random 3AM wakeups or a serious case of overactive bedtime brain, which makes falling asleep an impossible task? Staring at the clocks for hours, getting more and more frustrated as the hours tick away, and you still have yet to fall asleep.

There are several reasons why people have a hard time sleeping. It may be due to mental issues (depressions, anxiety, PTSD), certain medicines, a high intake of caffeinated drinks, or outside factors such as noise.

In some cases, trouble sleeping or insomnia may be due to anxiety. And since CBD research suggests it can help treat anxiety, CBD may also help with sleeping.

Here’s some findings from a study done after only one month of ingesting CBD capsules by those who experience difficulty sleeping:

  • 79.2% of all the participants said that CBD resulted in lower levels of anxiety
  • 66.7% of all the participants said that CBD gave them a better sleep experience

Another factor that can contribute to sleeplessness is pain. It’s easy to understand that if you have less pain and discomfort at night, you will sleep better. CBD can help manage and decrease pain. A topical roll-on can help with arthritis or chronic pain, which ultimately reduces the discomfort felt when sleeping. Many veterans’ physical ailments from serving can be reduced by using a CBD oil that is THC free.

Putting a few drops of CBD oil into your evening tea about an hour before bed can help prepare and relax your body for sleep.
