CBD Oil Helps Relieve Anxiety in Veterans

CBD Oil Helps Relieve Anxiety in Veterans. Anxiety is a debilitating mental issue that affects many people, including veterans. CBD oil has been shown to relieve the symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety is a natural part of our everyday life that likely dates to the early human experience. Anxiety is something that signaled the beginning of a stress response that culminated in our fight, flight, or freeze response.

Though anxiety originated from our hunter-gatherer origins, it is still a major part of our modern life. We still feel anxiety before important events, before crucial experiences, and it continues to prepare us for the fight or flight experiences that permeate our daily lives. Even though it doesn’t feel good, it is normal.

Unfortunately, anxiety can become overwhelming. When suffering from an anxiety disorder, or having an anxiety attack, it can feel impossible to get beyond even the simplest of problems. This is especially hard for those that have experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), such as our Veterans.

There are several ways to help treat the pervasive issue of anxiety, but one of the more recent treatment options that have shown promise is CBD oil. Though it has been known to help with other issues, CBD oil for anxiety may be the best option for suffering veterans.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress. It’s a feeling of fear or apprehension about what’s to come. The first day of school, going to a job interview or giving a speech may cause most people to feel fearful and nervous. Ordinary anxiety is a feeling that comes and goes every day, and, likely, multiple times a day.

Sometimes your feelings of anxiety can become extreme. In these cases, anxiety can last for longer than six months and may begin to interfere with your life. When this occurs, it may be a sign that you have an anxiety disorder.

In the case of an anxiety disorder, your everyday life has become affected by an overwhelming feeling of anxiety. This feeling of fear may be with you all the time, and it can become so intense that it may sometimes be debilitating.

This type of anxiety may cause you to stop doing everyday things and even prevent you from doing things that you once enjoyed. In these extreme cases, anxiety may prevent you from doing such normal things as entering an elevator, crossing the street or even leaving your home.

If left untreated, the anxiety will keep getting worse. As such, it is important to recognize the symptoms of general anxiety. They include an increased heart rate, rapid breathing, restlessness, trouble concentrating and difficulty falling asleep.

Unfortunately, anxiety attacks can vary greatly, and symptoms may differ among individuals. That’s because the many symptoms of anxiety don’t happen to everyone, and they can change over time.

While we have already covered symptoms of general anxiety, it is best to cover the common symptoms of an anxiety attack so that you are aware if you have slipped into an episode. As such, if you experience any or several of these, you could be in the middle of an anxiety attack and seek medical help: feeling faint or dizzy, shortness of breath, dry mouth, sweating, chills or hot flashes, apprehension and worry, restlessness, distress, fear, and numbness or tingling.

In many cases, extreme anxiety and anxiety disorders can have a more adverse effect on those that have suffered some past trauma. There are no better examples than our veterans — those men and women who have returned from the pain and fear that is war. It’s true; veterans may experience stress and anxiety because of these past events — like combat or a traumatic military training experience — that are painful to remember and hard to accept. This certainly doesn’t help those veterans who are now dealing with the stress and anxiety of other life experiences, like a job change or family conflicts.

This intensified stress and anxiety may sometimes cause physical symptoms, as were mentioned above or others like trembling or shaking. This can then lead to feelings of panic or unease. If these conditions continue at a high level, they can lead to more health problems and have been associated with chronic disease. Over time, stress and anxiety can interfere with a veteran’s work, daily activities and put a strain on their relationships.

Now that we are aware of what severe anxiety looks like, and the increased risk it adds to a veteran’s life, let’s delve into what may be the newest treatment for it: CBD oil.

What Is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a product that’s derived from cannabis. It’s a type of cannabinoid, which are the chemicals naturally found in marijuana plants. Even though it comes from marijuana plants, CBD doesn’t create a “high” effect or any form of intoxication — that’s caused by another cannabinoid, known as THC.

CBD is extracted from marijuana plants as either an oil or powder. These can be mixed into creams or gels. They can be put into capsules and taken orally or rubbed on your skin. The multiple sclerosis drug, nabiximols, is sprayed as a liquid into your mouth. How CBD should be used depends largely on what it’s being used for. Talk to your doctor before using CBD oil as it can have side effects.

While CBD oil usually doesn’t have any major risks, some side effects have been recorded. These side effects can include depression, dizziness, hallucinations, low blood pressure, irritability, and insomnia.

There is some controversy surrounding cannabis products, like CBD oil, because of recreational marijuana use and the stigma associated with it. This is likely the reason that more studies have not been done on CBD, as marijuana has the status of a Schedule 1 substance. As such, researchers have a hard time studying marijuana and its derivatives.

However, a growing awareness about the possible health benefits of CBD oil is quickly rising.

How Does CBD Oil Help Anxiety?

To understand how CBD oil can help those suffering from anxiety, we first need to understand more about how our body and brain work. For our purposes, we should be aware that the human body has many different receptors. Receptors are protein-based chemical structures that are attached to your cells. They receive signals from different stimuli.

CBD oil is thought to interact with some specific receptors, namely the CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, respectively. Although the exact way CBD affects CB1 receptors in the brain isn’t fully understood, it may alter serotonin signals.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in your overall mental health. Low serotonin levels are commonly associated with people who have depression. In some cases, not having enough serotonin may also cause anxiety.

This is where CBD is thought to help. Like other medications prescribed to help with low serotonin, such as sertraline or fluoxetine, it will help boost those neurotransmitter levels to relieve symptoms of anxiety by helping to relieve stress, modulating heart rate and even inducing sleep (for those with sleeping issues).

CBD oil has also had success in treating peripheral issues associated with increased anxiety. For instance, multiple recent studies have shown that CBD can help with PTSD symptoms, such as having nightmares and replaying negative memories. These studies have looked at CBD as a standalone PTSD treatment as well as a supplement to traditional treatments like medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
